ELBA AND THE ARGONAUTS
According to legend in the III Century BC the beach at Ghiaie dell’Isola d’ Elba was made up of smooth, white stones. It is said  that when the exhausted Argonauts landed on Elba they dried their sweat with the white stones of the Ghiaie and it is since then that the stones became speckled.
For your stay on Elba we propose the Elba Costa dei Gabbiani holiday village

Aleatico dell’Elba
The Ripalte estate vineyards, in the Tuscan Arcipelago National park

In the last decade of the 19th Century Count Tobler, a Swiss nobleman who loved Italy, created the Ripalte Estate by reclaiming the Southern point of the Island, 450 hectares of Mediterranean maquis The Estate Farm was famous for its animals, fruit, oil and especially for its magnificent wine.
The Estate was then transformed into a hunting reserve for the family of the Theodoli Marquis and later became a tourist facility.
In 2002 the estate owners decided to re-cultivate the celebrated vine growing areas and now 10 hectares of new vineyards occupy the finest coastal fields.
More than half of the crop are Aleatico grapes, coming from the most prestigious grapevine grown on the Island of Elba, produced by the Poggio Turco Vineyards. The wine itself is a complex, sweet, pleasurable passito wine.

Nearby the Gorgaccio Vineyards produce Vermentino, a full flavoured, aromatic, white wine the wine of the same name. It has a distinct taste and structure. These two wines are typical of the style and tradition of  the smaller Mediterranean islands.
The vines are planted on very difficult soil. Due to the fact that the soil is stony and does not retain water the grape production is reduced but the quality of the grapes is very good.
No chemical products are used for the phyto-sanitation treatments and the limited fertilizer applied is organic.
A new wine cellar is currently being built  on the slopes of the Colle di Gianni. Its main function will be grape fermentation, wine-making and product ageing.
It will allow visitors the chance to observe the complex production process. The whole project is the work of the architect Tobia Scarpa.
